  1. Cut all of the hot cross buns in half and butter both sides
  2. Butter the stoneware dish thoroughly
  3. Place the bottom halves of the hot cross buns in the bottom of the dish, butter side up
  4. Pour the custard into a mixing bowl, and add the semi-skimmed milk and the eggs
  5. Whisk the ingredients together and pour half over the hot cross bun bases
  6. Sprinkle half of the sultanas over the hot cross buns, and place the top halves of the hot cross buns into the dish butter side down
  7. Pour over the remaining custard mixture and sultanas and leave to stand for 20-25 minutes
  8. While that is standing, preheat your oven to 160 degrees
  9. Sprinkle the demerara sugar evenly over the dish
  10. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the custard has set
  11. Allow to stand before serving
